What is GST Registration?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration is mandatory for businesses that exceed a certain turnover threshold or fall under specific categories. It allows businesses to collect and pay GST legally.

Who Needs to Register for GST?

  • Businesses with turnover exceeding:

    • ₹40 lakhs (for goods) or ₹20 lakhs (for services) in most states

    • ₹10 lakhs in special category states

  • E-commerce sellers (Amazon, Flipkart, etc.)

  • Businesses making inter-state sales

  • Casual taxable persons

  • Input Service Distributors (ISD)

  • Non-resident taxable persons

  • Entities paying tax under the reverse charge mechanism

Documents Required for GST Registration

1. For Proprietorship

  • PAN card of the proprietor

  • Aadhaar card of the proprietor

  • Passport-size photo

  • Business address proof (Electricity bill/Rent agreement & NOC)

  • Bank account details (Cancelled cheque/Passbook statement)

2. For Partnership Firm

  • PAN card of the firm & partners

  • Aadhaar card of partners

  • Partnership deed

  • Business address proof

  • Bank account details

  • Authorization letter for GST registration

3. For Private Limited Company / LLP

  • PAN card of the company

  • Certificate of Incorporation

  • MOA & AOA (for Pvt Ltd) / LLP Agreement (for LLP)

  • PAN & Aadhaar of Directors/Partners

  • Business address proof

  • Bank account details

  • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) of an authorized signatory

  • Board resolution/Authorization letter

GST Registration Process

  1. Visit GST Portalwww.gst.gov.in

  2. Fill the GST REG-01 Form – Provide business and personal details

  3. Upload Required Documents

  4. Receive ARN (Application Reference Number)

  5. Verification by GST Officer

  6. Get GSTIN & Certificate

GST return is a document that taxpayers registered under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) must file to report their sales, purchases, tax collected, and tax paid. The filing frequency depends on the type of taxpayer and the GST scheme they are under.

Types of GST Returns in India

  1. GSTR-1 – Monthly/quarterly return for outward supplies (sales).

  2. GSTR-3B – Monthly summary return for tax payment.

  3. GSTR-4 – Annual return for composition scheme taxpayers.

  4. GSTR-5 – Return for non-resident taxable persons.

  5. GSTR-6 – Return for Input Service Distributors (ISD).

  6. GSTR-7 – Return for TDS deductors under GST.

  7. GSTR-8 – Return for e-commerce operators.

  8. GSTR-9 – Annual return for regular taxpayers.

  9. GSTR-9C – GST audit return for businesses above a certain turnover.

Due Dates for GST Returns

  • GSTR-1: 11th of the following month (monthly) / 13th of the following quarter (quarterly)

  • GSTR-3B: 20th of the following month (monthly filers) / 22nd or 24th (quarterly)

  • GSTR-4: 30th April (annual)

  • GSTR-9 & 9C: 31st December (annual)

Late Fees & Penalties

  • ₹50 per day (₹25 CGST + ₹25 SGST) for late filing of GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B.

  • ₹20 per day (₹10 CGST + ₹10 SGST) for NIL returns.

  • Interest at 18% per annum on delayed tax payment.
